The weekend of 21st and 22nd April 2001 saw almost 70 youngsters enjoying a hands-on experience of steam engines at the BSEPS organised Young Steam Apprentice Weekend at Home Farm in Old Warden Park.

With about thirty BSEPS members and parents helping out it was a first class opportunity to give boys and girls from as young as six an introduction to part of Britain's heritage. As well as from Bedfordshire, the children came from Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Northants, Notts and Oxfordshire.

On Saturday the Steam Apprentices, in groups of two and three, were given the change to steer the full-size and miniature engines. On Sunday they had a chance to light a fire in the engines and learn a bit about steam engine maintenance, as well as do some brass polishing, before sitting down to breakfast cooked on a shovel on an engines fire.
