On the 24th and 25th April 2004, the Society held it's 6th Steam Apprentice Driving Weekend at Old Warden Park. The weather was great, and again well supported by members, both helping and with engines. There were sixteen full-size engines and six miniature steam engines for the apprentices to gain experience and get their hands dirty on. Saturday was aimed at all ages, with over 80 apprentices taking part and over 40 on Sunday, which was for the more experienced and older apprentices. On Saturday evening, certificates were presented to all of the apprentices. There was then a large gathering of Mamod and Wilesco models in steam; solid fuel blocks being kindly donated by Mamod. Anglia TV attended on Sunday and there was TV coverage on both Sunday and Monday evening news bulletins. On Sunday, the apprentices cooked breakfast the traditional way, on a shovel and later completed a road theory test. They the had the chance to complete a parking manoeuvre in addition to the other driving activities. Pictures courtesy of Mark Worbey, Alec Parrish and Cecil Worbey. |
