John Crawley - President John founded the Society in 1956 deciding a club would be a good idea in the area after steaming his engines in the local area in the mid 1950's and watching their enthusiasm. People used to write to him and ask when he would next be steaming his engines as they would like to come along. A gathering was held late in 1955 and this lead to the formation of the Society the next year. John was one of the early preservationists who saved many engines from being scrapped. He travelled around many engine works collecting information and was lucky enough to make friends with people like Alf Pepper and Sidney Harrison who worked at traction engine builders John Fowler and Charles Burrell respectively. |
